Point-Of-Use (POU) Devices

DISCLAIMER: MPW water meets or exceeds the Safe Drinking Water Act standards. MPW does not consider home treatment devices necessary and does not recommend them.

Customers who use home water treatment devices should check their filters often to ensure proper operation.
If not used correctly, or are improperly maintained, these devices may actually deteriorate a customer’s water quality. This deterioration typically occurs when home water filters remove the residual chlorine. Chlorine is used to disinfect the water. Without proper chlorine levels, bacteria may actually grow inside the water filter.Customers utilizing such "Point-0f-Use" devices, or POUs, should follow a checklist for proper maintenance.

Carbon Filters Are Common POUs
Carbon filters are effective in trapping organic matter in water. Carbon filters packed with organic matter provide an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. In addition, the efficiency of these filters decreases with use. Customers should follow these recommendations:

  • Use only with microbiologically safe water.
  • Change filters frequently.
  • Follow manufacturer’s advice for installation and service.

Storing Home Treated Water
Since most home treatment units remove chlorine, home treated water should be consumed immediately after treatment. Different bacteria can grow in almost any water, especially at warm temperatures. If not used right away, home treated water can be stored a few days in the refrigerator or in a cooler.

Dechlorinated water that is stored at ambient temperatures in a tank on a boat or camper poses a special problem. These storage tanks should be cleaned, disinfected, and refilled periodically.
